BRIEF 15: AN EXHIBITION OF PARIS//SCREEN PRINTING//OUGD603

screen printing:
After printing our mock up and measuring the spine in preparation for screen printing we exposed our screens and decided on stock choices. At first we wanted a black cover with white type but whilst choosing stock we decided to try and test out as many colours as possible and try foiling to see if that would work with the design of the book.

We decided to go with black thin card, a maroon red colour and a blue to test out the white ink.  We first asked for an opinion in the screen print room on whether the typeface and size would be too small to screen print or if it would be risky.  This was obviously very important as the cover needed to be plain and have the text displayed very clearly and legible.  After speaking to Andy he said it should be fine and so we exposed the screen.
When prepping the file for printing to expose the screen we needed to make sure everything was in line perfectly as when the book is reversed upside down it should work as the same book just translated into French.
Final prints:  Lisa and I are happy with the way the text has come out on the covers, the contrast of white ink on dark backgrounds, especially the black works well.  We learnt quickly whilst doing it that the quicker you keep printing the better its going to come out as the paint can end up drying and eventually blocking the screen leaving the text slightly distorted or not printed as clean as we would of liked.
foiling:
After screen printing on the three selected colours we moved onto foiling as we had discussed the possibility of this before hand.  We thought a bronze or copper would be a nice contrast against the black. As we have only printed two copies of the book we will need to be selective about which cover colour we choose and whether we go for screen printed covers or foiled.  We discussed making two variations, one with the screen printed version and another with foiling, but we would have to see whether they then worked as a set.
