BRIEF 03: ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS//THE BRIEF//OUGD603

BRIEF 11: DRINKS CLUB//BRANDING RESEARCH//OUGD603

drinks club branding - visual research
I have started researching into existing branding and drinks label designs in order to get some inspiration for the branding of the drinks club.

'Founded in November last year by art director Paul Belford and ex Wolff Olins creative director Martin Brown, Paul Belford Ltd has revealed its very first branding project - for Waddesdon Wine, the Rothschild's UK wine merchant…'
I really like the whole idea of the bottles being displayed in a designed wrapping paper, like below.  I think this could be something that would work well for the Drinks Club.  I have thought about either repeatedly placing the Drinks Club logo onto brown parchment style stock, I think this stock choice could emphasise the style of tradition for the branding.
Another idea would be to include the logo on the wrapping paper and create various styles with either various drink names/recipes printed on or a light hearted manifesto for the drinks club.  If I were to make a variation of wrapping papers for wine bottles I would need to think about stock type in terms of colour and weighting.  If three variations were made I would consider brown/parchment, off white/cream and black (typeface colour would then be picked accordingly to stock choice.)
I like this simple logo design for Baltica Vodka.  I feel something more type based would be more suitable for the drinks club.  I think this typeface compliments the type of bottle its displayed in, I think having the logo printed directly onto the bottle, like in this case, has worked well for the style of branding.  Whilst I have thought about this I feel the style and design I want to try and demonstrate whilst working on the Drinks Club branding would benefit from a nice stock for the drinks label.
I think presentation is highly important when displaying the final brand, laying the logo out on a textured stock background would make my drinks club branding look a lot cleaner and professional and allows the logo to be displayed in a clear and legible way.  I also like the idea of using an accent or symbol over a specific area of the text, whether that would be necessary is something I would have to look into when trying to create a strong concept or link it with a word from another language.
I really like this simple label design, clean and crisp with a suitable typeface.  I also think the photography compliments the brand, this is something I will have to consider when photographing my final products.  I have been thinking about potential props that could be used to represent the drinks club image in the best possible way.  I think generally the images will look more effective and show the brand in a good light with traditional bottles and glasses, wooden surfaces to display the products and a drinks cabinet.
Cuvée S is a result of a collaborationship between Master of Wine Sebastian Bredal and the largest online dating service in Norway called sukker.no (translates sugar).
The goal was to create a product that visualized "LOVE" in a surprising way with a modern expression.
I think this is an unusual design for standard wine bottle labels you usually come across.  I think it works well with the concept and I like how much type is actually positioned on the bottle.  This is something that would work quite nicely for the Drinks Club if I could find some suitable and relevant passages that would work with Drinks club.

BRIEF 05: UNSUNG HEROES AND HEROINES//EVALUATION//PROPOSED EXHIBITION//OUGD603

evaluation of brief so far:
For the second part of the brief I have decided to create promotional material for a proposed exhibition that would look at unsung heroes and heroines and also look at the concept of memories and the forgotten.  I will be making a promotional poster for the exhibition and then to further the project I will be collecting information from a variety of people, either a memory or a sentence about their unsung hero or heroine.  With enough data collected this should hopefully allow me to display a wall of various peoples memories and the celebration of unsung heroes and heroines.

suitable venue/space hire
This is just a proposal for an exhibition, so the promotional material won't need to be used in a real life environment.  However, I thought I would research into potential places I could see the exhibition being set up.  The exhibition should explore the idea of memory and history with the topic of unsung heroes and heroines.

I thought the leeds gallery would be a good place to use as it says its particularly good for pop up exhibitions.

'Leeds Gallery Munro House is an independent commercial art gallery in Leeds, West Yorkshire specialising in Photography, Illustration and Fine Art. With a focus that is both local and national the gallery’s aim is to support local arts and culture while also bringing artists and their work to the city from further afield.
Exhibitions are on a 4 week turnaround. Work is hung using a flexible cable and track-based system, meaning we are able to take the space back to a ‘white box’ relatively quickly – this is particularly useful for ‘pop-up’ exhibitions and events.'

BRIEF 01: CONTEMPORARY CULTURE//ZINE & PHOTOGRAPHY RESEARCH//OUGD603

contact list
I have been in contact with the designers/photographs I have chosen, most of the cameras got to the desired destination, however for some reason the cameras didn't reach dubai and argentina.  I had to send them out again recorded delivery which enabled them to reach Ryan and Sofia the second time round.  However this raises concern for how the cameras will reach me safely when being sent back.

zine and photography research
I have looked at some more examples online for the type of style and layout I would like to use when designing my own zines.  Recently I have been thinking about the possibility of having to make one bigger zine, rather than a collection, for the following reasons:

  • I do not receive all the cameras back (worst case scenario)
  • most of the images won't be good enough to feature in its own zine
examples

SLOW PAPARAZZO

Antoine Wilson

'Short on celebrities, long on afterglow, these seemingly empty public spaces were in fact occupied just moments ago by famous people going about their daily lives—Betty White, Harrison Ford, Laura Dern, Christian Bale, Billy Crystal and more… Painstakingly culled from Antoine Wilson’s ongoing “Slow Paparazzo” project.'

I think all the zines I have chosen as examples of something I would want to create would work really well depending on the quality of the photographs.  I'm hoping, purely based on the variety of cultures depicted in the set of photographs from each person it would be enough to show some interesting imagery.  I haven't thought about the specific content yet and whether their should be a lot of it or if the images can speak for themselves, I suppose this will become more apparent when I receive the photos.
This is a simplistic layout which I would consider, when I first began the project I imagined I would have a certain amount of text to put with the images, again I still don't know exactly how much but I feel this will become more clear when I can see the images.  I could research into that specific culture and write about their traditions etc. or possibly have the text change in accordance to language.

CROSSING OVER

Yanina Shevchenko

In March 2012 Yanina Shevchenko travelled from one end of Russia to the other and back again on the trans-siberian railway in a bid to discover for herself the true nature of her homeland. In the space of two weeks she spent a total of twelve days onboard, mingling with her fellow travellers and watching the Russian landscape unfold itself from her carriage window.
I like the front cover of this zine in particular, I think if I could create at least five zines with a strong front cover image depicting the feel of that city it would work really well.  I can explore layout and specific design, however until I have the images I wont know what needs to be done in order to improve designs/design a fitting image for the zines.

STAY YOUNG #3

Editions Ltd

I think this is my favourite design out of the three.  I think the front cover is fitting for the content, an interesting image and suitable typeface.  These are the type of images Im hoping are captured with the following designers when briefing them on 'contemporary culture' however I have to consider the quality of a disposable camera will be nowhere near as good as some of these examples with professional cameras being used.  I'm hoping I can play this to my advantage and the images will have a certain quality about them that allows them to be visually enticing in its own way.
