After drawing up new ideas and going with the 'philosophical' take on the branding I started designing potential logos. Whilst researching it became clear that the symbolism for philosophy was a lot harder to find then I'd originally intended. I started with the first idea I had which was to use the number 170. I thought this would look quite nice on the branding as quite a lot of alcohol spirit brands incorporate a number in the brand/title. Because I want the design of this to be mostly text it was quite hard to find a suitable typeface especially the right combination.
imagery/visuals:
I then researched into philosophy symbols or things that represent philosophy. The most popular search was the vitruvian man.
The drawing is based on the correlations of ideal human proportions with geometry described by the ancient Roman architect Vitruvius in Book III of his treatise De Architectura. Vitruvius described the human figure as being the principal source of proportion among the Classical orders of architecture. Vitruvius determined that the ideal body should be eight heads high. Leonardo's drawing is traditionally named in honor of the architect.)
Although I quite liked the idea of the visual, I don't think it fits with the actual concept:
I then tried the vitruvian man drawing in a much simpler form, as a diagram which I thought could work as a small part of the logo, and possibly be embossed or foiled as the design itself is quite simple. Although I don't think the basic diagram looks bad I don't think it goes with the feel of drinks club and I feel there would have to be a lot of emphasis on the printing and finishing of this branding if the logo was to stay this simple, however I am unsure about the time scale I will have left for this project and so it might be easier to design something a little more eye catching as to not rely on the printing and finishing to bring the design together.
Looking at how I can incorporate the signatures of famous philosophers into the logo design. Although these are live traced which actually changes the quality of the type. If I decide to definitely use the signature ideas I will have to trace them out and then scan them in and live trace again in order to not distort the hand writing.
