As most of our research will be done in Paris there is no need to look into existing images and research about Paris as that is something we will document ourselves. However we need to research into how to best display our findings and how we can best display our exhibition of Paris. In foundation I looked at artist Jim Dine who did an exhibition displaying photographs/writings/poetry/sculptures etc. based on his dreams. He also made 52 books titles under 'hot dream' as part of the project, a book for every week of the year for a year based on his dreams etc. I thought the way he presented some of this work could be inspiring for ideas on how to display our findings.
jim dine - hot dream
This multi-layered exhibition juxtaposes poetry, audio, books, collage, drawings, photographs, sculpture, and digital prints on canvas from 1999 to the present. Jim Dine: Hot Dream (52 Books) was on view at the Museum Liner Appenzell, Switzerland from June 22 to October 26, 2008. In the exhibition catalogue essay, curator Dr. Roland Scotti wrote that the work, “invent(s) the context for a new melody for the art of Jim Dine, for all the major byways of this seemingly inexhaustible creativity, which combines dream and reality.”
After displaying the photography Lisa and I spoke about a way to try and display it in a publication, how we could tie it together in a really simple way to just evidence our overall project. Something like this on a smaller scale could work well as the books divide parts of the exhibition up and display different themes in different books. The photography could be divided into categories in terms of architecture, people, signage etc.
I think this is a nice display of images, I think it evokes an atmosphere which is something we want to create about Paris when displaying our findings. I think this kind of layout would work depending on the way we printed the photographs and used a variation of stocks to get contrasting formats, sizes and textures. We have also thought about using hand written text as part of the design in some small way.
