After looking at Massin and his style and technique and how he combined words and image I wanted to try and represent the theme of dialogue, more specifically conversation, with the collected conversations I had recorded. My initial idea was to go through photographs I had and make a photo montage of people, hopefully showing some kind of interaction, communication or engaging in conversation. Then I would use the collected writings to form the type content of the poster.
Even though I liked the overall design I don't think it clearly communicated much conversation as there was only certain photographs I had that looked as though they were engaging in conversation.
I also felt with the images didn't really go with the written content of the recorded conversations as most of the mapping took place on the tube, so I feel the mix of random images and random conversation doesn't show clearly enough the idea of 'dialogue.' I then started to look for quotes about communication, dialogue and conversation as I felt this could be the way to try and give the idea a bit more context. I really liked this quote from The Catcher in the Rye and it can easily fit with the theme:
After reading the quote and thinking about ways to display it I thought the quote could work better on its own and there wouldn't be much need for the recorded conversations, I didn't want to make the design too complicated and felt all the material collected wouldn't be consistent in the design. I looked at using the speech marks as a symbol on the design instead of photographs.
After looking through photos and deciding that the quote by itself didn't work, the image looked too plain and the use of speech marks as symbols looked to simple and visually didn't seem to communicate the message I wanted. After looking through photos again I felt like I found a perfect one for the quote, being a group stood around engaging in conversation with one person looking straight at the camera, vacant look on his face, as though he is saying the quote.
Even though I was happy with the combination of image with quote, I felt the layout didn't quite work as well and that the text was too big and there was a lot of focus on the image, too much, I thought this could be cropped which would allow the design as a whole to work a lot better.
This way I feel the image communicates the quote and the theme of dialogue better, because of the cropping I feel like the design supports the quote, the only eye contact is made by the individual that the camera is focused on, showing he's not engaged in any of the conversation around him. I changed the typeface and point size as I feel it wasn't necessary to have the quote that big. I also took an extract of the quote to give the poster context from first glance.
