We initially decided we wanted to look at photo montage and collage techniques to create our flag design. We went with what we thought would be eye catching and interesting visuals, with the main focus being on birds and maps. With these images we felt we could create something really appealing visually and give it some kind of context. The visuals we chose would go well with the format of a flag, which usually symbolises a place/country, however in this case signifies a journey/various locations.
We looked at various images for the birds, deciding that a more illustrative design would work better, rather than a real image/photograph of a bird. We haven't thought about how exactly the layout would work, whether the main focus would be the map with the birds featuring or vice versa. We decided from the very start that the design would be designed in a collage type style, still to be decided whether to do it digitally or hand rendered.
When we started looking in more detail at maps and birds, this is where a concept began to attach itself and we started looking into bird migration and how specific birds could be connected to certain areas of maps based on their migration patterns, this also coincides with the journey and location theme which links to the 'map' format.
