Afte researching and deciding to split the brief into two parts we looked at how we could try and create some interesting visuals digitally, using some of our own photography. The initial ideas we had when researching and deciding themes etc. was to focus on nature as a main focus to creating visually interesting prints. This was supported by the works of Leif Podhajsky, who uses the natural world amongst other themes to create his patterns/visuals.
We split the designing into two areas, using Emily's photography she focused on imagery and photo manipulation, I looked at type and layout. Before I had looked at Emily's visual manipulation work I started playing around with some typefaces that I thought could work for the style of event and also based on the photography that we'd narrowed it down to.
I chose quite classic typefaces as it is promoting a design festival, I also thought the image is the main focus of the poster and the text should accompany this to give it context so it was important to not choose anything too artistic .
I thought for a design festival an appropriate typeface would be helvetica, I think the name of the festival works well with the modern simplicity of helvetica, however I don't think georgia particularly compliments it, I don't like the positioning of the date but this is one of the most important bits of information on the poster so needs to be considered appropriately.
This is similar to the first design that I had in mind, I think the type face works well for the word 'designival' but again, the italicised typeface doesn't seem to work that well with the title.
I thought this design worked better, block bold typeface to simply communicate the event but also to allow room for the visuals that we are working on to be the main focus. I don't think the lowercase typeface works particularly, this is something I need to think more about when looking at hierarchy of information.I then looked to see if I could make the festival title appear a bit more as a logo, also by separating the two words, this highlights the word design which is quite an important message to communicate as its promotion of a design festival.
These are the other two logo designs I thought could work, I prefer the second one including the information 'the largest design festival in the north.' I think that one could work as a potential obviously depending on the images used and the final layout we decide to go with.
These text layouts will all change accordingly to the images used, obviously I will have a better idea of the style and general layout when i've seen the images edited. I don't think this one works well but it will all depend on the size of the text. We also need to consider the paper size we would like to print on. For spectrum part two we want to create big prints, A2 onwards, with this part of the project it might only be necessary to print them at A3 size (depending on image quality)
As the brief states that the slogan for the campaign is 'design is...' Emily and I tried to think of creative ways to try and display this message. For the second part of the brief I have started carrying out a questionnaire that simply gets people to finish the sentence 'design is...' For part one of the brief I looked at some design quotes online to see if any would be suitable. Another thing to consider would be how the quote is presented on the poster layout.
