BRIEF 01: CONTEMPORARY CULTURE//ZINE & PHOTOGRAPHY RESEARCH//OUGD603

contact list
I have been in contact with the designers/photographs I have chosen, most of the cameras got to the desired destination, however for some reason the cameras didn't reach dubai and argentina.  I had to send them out again recorded delivery which enabled them to reach Ryan and Sofia the second time round.  However this raises concern for how the cameras will reach me safely when being sent back.

zine and photography research
I have looked at some more examples online for the type of style and layout I would like to use when designing my own zines.  Recently I have been thinking about the possibility of having to make one bigger zine, rather than a collection, for the following reasons:

  • I do not receive all the cameras back (worst case scenario)
  • most of the images won't be good enough to feature in its own zine

SLOW PAPARAZZO

Antoine Wilson

'Short on celebrities, long on afterglow, these seemingly empty public spaces were in fact occupied just moments ago by famous people going about their daily lives—Betty White, Harrison Ford, Laura Dern, Christian Bale, Billy Crystal and more… Painstakingly culled from Antoine Wilson’s ongoing “Slow Paparazzo” project.'

I think all the zines I have chosen as examples of something I would want to create would work really well depending on the quality of the photographs.  I'm hoping, purely based on the variety of cultures depicted in the set of photographs from each person it would be enough to show some interesting imagery.  I haven't thought about the specific content yet and whether their should be a lot of it or if the images can speak for themselves, I suppose this will become more apparent when I receive the photos.
This is a simplistic layout which I would consider, when I first began the project I imagined I would have a certain amount of text to put with the images, again I still don't know exactly how much but I feel this will become more clear when I can see the images.  I could research into that specific culture and write about their traditions etc. or possibly have the text change in accordance to language.

CROSSING OVER

Yanina Shevchenko

In March 2012 Yanina Shevchenko travelled from one end of Russia to the other and back again on the trans-siberian railway in a bid to discover for herself the true nature of her homeland. In the space of two weeks she spent a total of twelve days onboard, mingling with her fellow travellers and watching the Russian landscape unfold itself from her carriage window.
I like the front cover of this zine in particular, I think if I could create at least five zines with a strong front cover image depicting the feel of that city it would work really well.  I can explore layout and specific design, however until I have the images I wont know what needs to be done in order to improve designs/design a fitting image for the zines.

STAY YOUNG #3

Editions Ltd

I think this is my favourite design out of the three.  I think the front cover is fitting for the content, an interesting image and suitable typeface.  These are the type of images Im hoping are captured with the following designers when briefing them on 'contemporary culture' however I have to consider the quality of a disposable camera will be nowhere near as good as some of these examples with professional cameras being used.  I'm hoping I can play this to my advantage and the images will have a certain quality about them that allows them to be visually enticing in its own way.
